Family worries about losing ACA subsidy

Major changes are coming to the Affordable Care Act Marketplace in 2027, and many lawfully present immigrants could lose access to federal financial assistance.

If you currently receive help paying your monthly health insurance premium, now is the time to understand what may change.

The most important thing to remember is this:

Losing your Marketplace subsidy does not necessarily mean losing access to every health insurance option.

What's Changing in 2027?

Beginning January 1, 2027, federal premium tax credits and cost-sharing reductions will be restricted to eligible individuals under the new immigration-related requirements.

Among noncitizens, eligibility for these savings will generally be limited to:

  • Lawful Permanent Residents (Green Card holders).

  • Certain Cuban or Haitian entrants.

  • Individuals lawfully residing in the United States under the Compact of Free Association (COFA).

Other lawfully present immigrants, including many individuals with humanitarian or temporary immigration statuses, may no longer qualify for these federal savings.

However, many may still qualify to purchase Marketplace coverage at full price.

What Does This Mean for Your Family?

If you currently receive premium assistance, losing that assistance could significantly increase your monthly health insurance costs.

For some households, maintaining the same coverage may become difficult.

But before canceling your health insurance, you should understand the alternatives available to you.

Exploring Private Health Coverage

At IV Vierma, we help individuals and families explore available health insurance options, including certain private health coverage products outside the ACA Marketplace.

Depending on the product and your location, these options may provide access to established, nationally recognized private provider networks.

Network access, however, does not guarantee that every medical service will be covered.

Some private plans may have limitations involving pre-existing conditions, covered services, annual benefits, or other important protections.

That's why understanding the details matters.

Don't Wait Until You Lose Coverage

The Marketplace Open Enrollment Period begins November 1, 2026.

Use this opportunity to review your eligibility, understand your expected costs, and explore suitable alternatives before making changes.

Your health deserves a plan, not a last-minute decision.
