Every year, millions of Americans who get health insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace have an important opportunity to review their coverage: the Open Enrollment Period (OEP).

For 2027 coverage, Open Enrollment begins November 1, 2026. In states that use HealthCare.gov, Open Enrollment generally continues through January 15. To have coverage begin January 1, you generally need to enroll in or change plans by December 15.

But there is something important to remember:

Renewing your health insurance does not necessarily mean keeping the same plan without reviewing it first.

Why Should You Review Your Coverage Every Year?

Your personal situation may have changed during the past twelve months, but your health plan may have changed too.

Your monthly premium could be different. Deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and out-of-pocket limits may change. A doctor or hospital that was in-network this year may not necessarily participate in the same network next year.

Prescription drug coverage can also change.

That is why even if you are satisfied with your current health insurance, it is worth reviewing your coverage before renewing it.

Your Income Matters Too

If you receive financial assistance to help pay for Marketplace coverage, it is important to update your household information and your estimated income for 2027.

Marketplace financial assistance is based on several factors, including the household income you expect during the coverage year.

If your income, employment, or household situation has changed, make sure your application reflects your current circumstances and reasonable expectations for the coming year.

What Should You Prepare?

Before Open Enrollment begins, gather some basic information:

Your estimated household income for 2027, information about everyone who will be included on the application, your preferred doctors and specialists, and a list of the prescription medications you regularly take.

Having this information ready can make comparing plans much easier.

Don't Compare Plans Based on Premium Alone

A health plan with a low monthly premium is not necessarily the plan that will cost you the least throughout the year.

Look beyond the premium.

Consider the deductible, copays, coinsurance, maximum out-of-pocket costs, provider network, and prescription drug coverage.

The goal is not simply to find the cheapest health insurance.

The goal is to find coverage that makes sense for your healthcare needs and your budget.
